Gao Dongzi Tomb Cluster

The Gao Dongzi Tomb Cluster is a cultural relic protection unit of Chongqing Municipality.

The Gao Dongzi Tomb Cluster dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty. It is located on a hillside in Gao Dongzi She (village cluster), Gao Dongzi Village, Banqiao Town, Yongchuan District, Chongqing. There are three tombs in total, all facing south, which are rare single-chamber cliff tombs with wooden architectural features from the late Southern Song Dynasty. They are numbered sequentially from east to west as M1 to M3. The structure of M1 is rather unique: the tomb chamber is octagonal with wooden architectural imitation, featuring a domed ceiling and standing 2.6 meters high. The column capitals are carved with brackets and dragon heads, and there are seven niches in total. The middle part of the right column of the rear niche is inscribed with “Made in the spring of Kaixi era, Great Song Dynasty, by the artisan,” while the middle part of the left column is inscribed with “Nanyang Kou Tianfeng Lang’s longevity hall.” The lower parts of the niches are carved with kalavinka (a celestial bird), white tiger, xuanwu (black tortoise), vermilion bird, and azure dragon.

The Gao Dongzi Tomb Cluster is among the first group of cultural relic protection units of Chongqing Municipality.
