Chongqing Qiu Shaoyun Memorial Hall
Chongqing Qiu Shaoyun Memorial Hall is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a patriotic education base.
The Qiu Shaoyun Martyrs Memorial Hall is situated on the summit of Fengshan Mountain in Bachuan Subdistrict, Tongliang County, covering an area of 16,000 square meters. The name “Qiu Shaoyun Martyrs Memorial Hall” was inscribed by Yang Shangkun, former President of China and Executive Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission. The site comprises two main parts: the “Qiu Shaoyun Martyrs Monument” and the “Qiu Shaoyun Martyrs事迹 Exhibition Hall.” The memorial grounds feature 10,000 square meters of landscaped gardens adorned with lush greenery, offering a serene and elegant environment. Highlights include century-old wisteria, towering Chinese junipers, fragrant osmanthus trees, a vigorous 300-year-old yellow-leaf tree, as well as a circular pond, an ancient lotus ink-washing pool from the Song Dynasty, and remnants of the old city wall. From the elevated vantage point, the entire city can be viewed.
The Monument is located at the southern end of the memorial complex, facing south, and stands 15 meters tall. The front of the monument bears eight gilded characters “Qiu Shaoyun Martyrs Monument,” inscribed by Marshal Zhu De, Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, and Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission. Behind the monument is a sloping black granite “Martyrs’ Biography Stele.” Atop the monument is a 5-meter-high full-body bronze statue of the martyr, depicting him grasping a weapon, gazing into the distance, and marching forward with determination—symbolizing the heroic stature of the Chinese People’s Volunteers back then.
The “Qiu Shaoyun Martyrs事迹 Exhibition Hall” is situated at the highest point in the northern section of the complex. The grand structure rises 21 meters high and covers a total area of 1,100 square meters, including an 800-square-meter exhibition area divided into a foyer and five themed exhibition halls. It employs advanced technologies such as sound, light, and electricity to present the heroic deeds of Qiu Shaoyun. The foyer is located in the main hall on the first floor, featuring a statue at its center showing Qiu Shaoyun lying on the ground while being engulfed by flames. Above it are the words “The Great Soldier Qiu Shaoyun” in bold characters, with a backdrop of electrically illuminated raging flames. The left wall displays an inscription by Marshal Peng Dehuai, Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission, Defense Minister, and Commander and Political Commissar of the Chinese People’s Volunteers; the right wall features a message from the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Hall 1 is themed “Discovering the Hero,” introducing how the headquarters of the Chinese People’s Volunteers and the government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea posthumously honored the martyr. Hall 2, “In Search of the Hero,” details Qiu Shaoyun’s difficult childhood and his growth through service in the People’s Liberation Army and later the Chinese People’s Volunteers. Hall 3, “Interpreting the Hero,” showcases the martyr’s unwavering discipline as he endured flames during an ambush mission without flinching, prioritizing military code over his own life. Hall 4, “Remembering the Hero,” highlights tributes from the people of China and Korea, along with inscriptions by party, state, and military leaders for Qiu Shaoyun. Hall 5, “Weapons and Equipment,” displays firearms used by the volunteers, exhibiting 42 different weapons and one Type-Jian fighter plane in the collection. In total, the museum houses over 250 exhibits, including more than 40 national first-, second-, and third-class cultural relics, over 20 items belonging to the martyr, 17 inscriptions by 13 leaders including Zhu De, Jiang Zemin, Yang Shangkun, and Li Peng, 2 messages and 3 commendation certificates and medals from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, as well as over 10 gifts. There are also over 150 calligraphy works by renowned artists such as Xiao Xian and Deng Panshi.
The Qiu Shaoyun Martyrs Memorial Hall is a National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base and a National Youth Education Base.
