Wengfeng Temple is located north of the Wu Gorge entrance on the Yangtze River Three Gorges, with its peak at an elevation of 720 meters and situated 19 kilometers from Wushan County. Before the year 1786 (the 51st year of the Qianlong reign), Wengfeng Temple was known as “Lingyun Temple.” It encompasses the ancient Gao Tang Taoist Temple and Chaoyuan Temple, both of which have a history of a thousand years, telling the stories of the historical changes and spirit of the people of Wushan over centuries. This temple belongs to the Longmen Sect of the Quanzhen School of Taoism and carries historical records of Taoist culture in Wushan.

Walking up along the fitness trail and standing in the observation pavilion, you can enjoy the beautiful Wu Gorge, the magnificent high gorges and flat lake of the Yangtze River, the scenic Wu Mountain Twelve Peaks, and a full view of the new county town. The night view of the beautiful new Wushan city outshines Little Hong Kong and has long been praised as “a thousand people bowing by day, and ten thousand lights shining by night.”

Wengfeng Temple is perfect for spring outings and Buddhist worship, summer camping and cooling off, autumn hiking and fitness, and winter sightseeing and photography. With the river flowing eastward beneath your feet, it has always been a sacred place for leisure, outings, and pilgrimage in the hearts of the people of Wushan.

There is a saying: “In January, Wengfeng offers fragrant incense to mothers, with hearts soaring under cherry blossom trees. In February, fitness activities abound on Wengfeng, where the rolling clouds and waves bring the sound of glory. In March, golden rapeseed flowers bloom on Wengfeng, with the serene beauty of Qingxu stretching vast and wild.”

Summer in Wushan brings ever-changing clouds and rain. Observing the sunrise over the Wu Gorge and the Wushan clouds and rain from the mountain ridge of Wengfeng Temple is one of the most typical vantage points, a must-visit spot for photographers. There are six pavilions available for sightseeing and photography. Wengfeng Temple is located on the windward side of the Wu Gorge, where cool breezes blow in summer, making it an excellent place to escape the heat. Many locals drive here after work, set up tents, and camp to cool off.

Autumn truly lives up to the saying “a thousand people bow by day, and ten thousand lights shine by night.” Looking westward, the long sunset over the Yangtze River complements the night view of the new town. Cruise ships and speedboats glide across the golden lake surface under the setting sun, tracing magical paths. It’s like “the afterglow of the sunset stretching over a thousand sails, and fishing boats crossing like bead curtains.” Various organizations also arrange mountain climbs for their employees, making the mountaintop a lively place filled with laughter and joy—absolutely delightful.

Entering winter, the Wengfeng Mountain is adorned with colorful foliage. Trees of all kinds don their vibrant hues, while wild Albizia trees bloom brilliantly. The red leaves of the Three Gorges make a dazzling appearance, and the small, delicate red-leaf trees lining the stone steps on both sides are particularly endearing.

All year round, the scenery of Wengfeng is picturesque. Ascend to the summit of Wengfeng, gaze into the distance, and you’ll see the Yangtze River like a ribbon, the flat lake like a mirror, the winding mountain ranges, and the drifting white clouds. The spectacular new immigrant town of Wushan boasts rows of high-rises.

Transportation Routes

A. Two shuttle buses run to and from Wengfeng Summit from Wushan Pinghu Market, with 5–10 trips per day. The fare is 10 yuan. Buses depart at 6:00, 8:00, and 10:00 am, and the latest return trip from the summit is at 5:00 pm.

B. If driving, take Provincial Highway 301 from Wushan, cross Longmen Bridge, turn onto the Huishou Line toward Liangping, pass the botanical garden, enter the county road near Qixing Primary School, and finally reach the summit. There is also a newly built direct road to Wengfeng Temple uphill, though this road has a steep gradient.

C. Take the bus from the Jiangnan area below the Immigration Square. The fare is 10 yuan. Get off at the bridge, then start hiking from the original toll gate entrance.

D. Go to the Ancient City Wharf and take the Gaolongzui ferry across the river to the 175-meter water level area (Konghoutuo). Start climbing a section of mountain path, then reach the highway bridge’s original toll gate and begin walking along the newly built stone stairway trail.
