Hainan Provincial Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Hainan Provincial Museum is a comprehensive modern museum in Hainan Province. Located at No. 68 Guoxing Avenue, Haikou City, in the eastern part of the Provincial Cultural Park. Before 1984, Hainan Provincial Museum was once the only provincial-level museum in China that had a name but no physical building. Construction began in 1984 and it officially opened on November 15, 2008.

The museum covers a total area of over 60 acres. The first phase of the project occupies approximately 18,000 square meters, mainly including exhibition halls, cultural relics storage, technical facilities, service areas, and office spaces. The second phase has a construction area of about 7,000 square meters. Centered around the conservation and restoration of the “Huaguangjiao No. 1” shipwreck and nearly ten thousand porcelain artifacts salvaged from the wreck, it highlights exhibits and specimens related to South China Sea history, the Maritime Silk Road, as well as marine biological and mineral resources.

The museum houses four permanent basic exhibitions: “Hainan Cultural Relics Collection Exhibition,” “Hainan History Exhibition,” “Hainan Ethnic Minorities Exhibition,” and “Hainan Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition.” These exhibitions comprehensively showcase the immigration and development history of Hainan, as well as the unique culture of the island created collectively by the Li, Miao, Hui, and Han ethnic groups, along with Hainan’s intangible cultural heritage and cultural relics.

The museum's original temporary exhibitions, such as “Luminous Relics – Special Exhibition of Precious Cultural Relics Donated to Hainan Provincial Museum by the National Cultural Heritage Administration,” “Aroma of Antiquity – Special Exhibition on Hainan Huanghuali Culture,” “Direction of the Sea – Special Exhibition on Huaguangjiao I Shipwreck,” “Traces of Qiongdao – The 75-Year-Old Expedition Journey of Two American Youths,” and “Ceramic Masterpieces – Special Exhibition of Cultural Relics Allocated to Hainan Provincial Museum by the National Cultural Heritage Administration,” use a rich array of artifacts, lifelike settings, and multimedia displays to allow visitors to fully and multi-dimensionally experience the profound traditional culture and the unique historical ambiance of Hainan. These have made unique contributions to the development of Hainan as a tourist island.
