Shrine of Su Dongpo

The Shrine of Su Dongpo is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Shrine of Su Dongpo is located to the east of the Five Officials’ Shrine in Qiongshan, Hainan. It was built in memory of the great Northern Song Dynasty literary figure Su Shi. The site features remnants of the Twin Springs and Dongzhuo Pavilion left by Su Shi. It is a garden-style courtyard where the shrine, green trees, and flowers are laid out in an artful arrangement. Meandering streams and winding paths echo with the gentle sounds of bubbling springs. To the left of the Shrine of Su Dongpo lies the nearly 10-acre Qiong Garden, which contains Eastern Slope relics such as the Floating Grain Spring, the Grain Spring Pavilion, and the Heart-Cleansing Pavilion. Beside the Floating Grain Spring, a pink wall is inlaid with a stone tablet engraved with the three large characters “Floating Grain Spring.” In front of the tablet, cool spring water fills two square wells, one above the other. Legend has it that these were discovered here by Su Dongpo. The spring water is pure, crystal clear, and sweet to the taste. Even in the peak of summer, no limescale has formed in the spring for over ten years. Tea brewed with this water is extraordinarily fragrant and is renowned as the “Number One Spring in Hainan.” Today, the spring water remains crystal clear, though it no longer gushes forth.

Above the Floating Grain Spring are the Grain Spring Pavilion and the Heart-Cleansing Pavilion. It is said that these two structures were built during the Ming Dynasty by Weng Ruyu and during the Qing Dynasty by Ye Rulan, respectively, inspired by a poem written by Su Dongpo.
