Qiongshan Confucius Temple

Qiongshan Confucius Temple is a cultural heritage site protected by Hainan Province.

The temple is located on Wen Zhuang Road in Fucheng Town, facing south. Also known as Shenggong Temple, it was originally called the Confucius Temple. According to the *Qiongshan County Annals* compiled by Zhu Weichao in the Qing Dynasty: the Confucius Temple was first built during the Song Dynasty, originally situated at Haikou Pu. It was relocated multiple times throughout the dynasties before being placed 300 meters north of the ancient city’s southern gate and east of the moat. The roof features nine ridges and is structured in a double-eave hip-and-gable style. The original complex included a rear hall, the Dacheng Hall, east and west side halls, the Lingxing Gate, and the Dan Chi steps, all of which were grand and magnificent. It served as the main Confucian educational institution in Qiongshan through the ages, covering a maximum area of “500 feet in length and 128 feet in width, totaling 64,000 square feet.” Today, only the Dacheng Hall remains. It is five bays wide and three bays deep, facing south, with a double-eave hip-and-gable roof. The beam frame structure follows a seven-rafter wooden design, with exquisite carvings of dragons, lions, lotuses, and cloud motifs between the beams and rafters, exuding solemnity and elegance. It is a key cultural relic protection unit of Haikou City.
