The Former Residence of Feng Baiju, a Hainan Provincial Patriotic Education Base, is located in Changtai Village, about 5 kilometers south of Yunlong Town, Qiongshan District, Haikou City. Surrounded by lush greenery, the village can be accessed via a flat road. Beside an ancient banyan tree with sprawling roots and dense shade, one will find the former residence of General Feng Baiju, hailed by Premier [name omitted] as “a banner of the people of Qiongbei.”

Backed by hills and facing verdant fields, the former residence of Feng Baiju sits at the highest point of the village. Lush ancient trees grow behind the house, while the front yard is spacious, adorned with vibrant flower beds and lush green lawns. Originally built in 1922, the residence was burned down by Japanese forces during their “mopping-up” operations in the winter of 1942. It was restored in 1951 and rebuilt to its original appearance in 1984. In the spacious front yard, visitors are greeted by a majestic sculpture of Feng Baiju, whose resolute expression commands deep respect. On the black granite base of the sculpture, five gilded characters reading “General Feng Baiju,” inscribed by [name omitted], shine brilliantly.

The residence consists of four parts: the main house, rear house, bronze statue, and exhibition room, covering an area of 6 mu. Approaching the residence, the first thing that catches the eye is the half-body bronze statue of Feng Baiju erected in the center of the courtyard. The statue is 1 meter tall and 1 meter wide, with a base that is 1.9 meters high and 1.2 meters wide. The front of the base is inscribed with “General Feng Baiju” by Comrade [name omitted], while the back features a “Brief Biography of General Feng Baiju.” Adjacent to the statue is the main house, a traditional 13-beam, 10-pillar Hainan-style residence made of stone and wood, featuring a central hall flanked by bedrooms on both sides. The top of the main gate is adorned with a horizontal plaque inscribed with “Former Residence of Feng Baiju” by Marshal [name omitted]. Inside the hall, the eight-immortal chairs, the desk and bed in the bedroom, and the bamboo baskets and bags in the kitchen are all well-preserved, exuding a rustic charm through the passage of time. The house is surrounded by gray stone walls and topped with green tiles. The rear house is a smaller structure with 5 beams and 3 bays.

The entire courtyard of the residence is simple yet elegant, with a serene environment. It not only recreates the historical setting but also tells the story of how an eminent proletarian revolutionary was born and raised in such an ordinary farming family.

On the right side of the residence’s front yard, there is an exhibition room dedicated to the life and achievements of Feng Baiju. The exhibition is divided into four sections: “Devotion to the Revolution,” “A Pillar of Strength,” “Legacy in History,” and “Dedication to the End.” It displays artifacts and photos related to General Feng Baiju’s family background, life, and revolutionary activities. Here, visitors can learn about the history of the Qiongbei revolutionary struggle and the legendary yet arduous life of General Feng Baiju. Influenced by Feng Baiju, 20 of his relatives joined the revolution, and 12 of them sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the people of Hainan.

A couplet at the residence reads: “The general’s great deeds shine through history; the loyal spirit illuminates the world.” This is an accurate tribute to Feng Baiju.
