Haikou City Christian Fucheng Church

With an area of over 2,300 square meters, the new sanctuary of Haikou City Christian Fucheng Church can accommodate more than two thousand worshippers. Located on the south side of Fengxiang Road in Fucheng Town, Haikou City, its ochre-colored Gothic porch and bright, open two-story interior hall blend the solemnity of church architecture with the local characteristics of Hainan’s buildings. It is one of the largest Christian churches on Hainan Island.

In 1881, missionaries from the American Presbyterian Church's (North) West China Mission, sent from Hong Kong, dispatched Reverend Ji Wentian to Fucheng, Haikou. He rented the Chen Family Ancestral Hall to establish Hainan’s first preaching station and purchased land in preparation for building a church. In 1912, Reverend Zhang Yuesheng took over and built a large worship hall of about 500 square meters in Beiguan Village, Fucheng. Subsequently, a pastor’s residence, a Bible building, and the Pijin Girls' Middle School and Waimei Boys' Middle School were established. “At that time, Fucheng Church was unrivaled on Hainan Island.”

In 1939, when the Japanese army occupied Hainan, they killed Reverend Wang Zhide of Fucheng Church. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, all American missionaries were sent to internment camps, and congregants had to hold services in each other’s homes. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, church activities resumed as normal. In 1951, the church was taken over by the government, and worshippers continued their gatherings in homes until the Cultural Revolution.

In 1981, after the restoration of religious policies on the mainland, worshippers of Fucheng Church held public services at the home of Elder Li Yunmin at No. 5 Ma’an Street. In 1985, the government allocated a plot of land at No. 22, Datie Lane, Wenfang Road, Fucheng Town, Qiongshan District, Haikou City, to the Fucheng Christian Church. In 1989, a worship hall of over 370 square meters was constructed.
