Haikou Zhongshan Road

Haikou Zhongshan Road is a well-known scenic street in China. The shophouses here are the most famous, filled with Lingnan and Nanyang (Southeast Asian) characteristics. Most of these shophouses were built in the early 20th century by overseas Chinese returning from Southeast Asia, who drew inspiration from the architectural styles of that region. The buildings are generally not very tall, mostly two or three stories high, and the street is home to many old specialty shops and quaint, cozy cafes.

Today’s Zhongshan Road is like a movie set. The shophouse architectural complex of Haikou was formed between the 1920s and 1940s, when overseas Chinese brought architectural styles and designs from various places to Haikou, creating a unique blend of European and Asian urban aesthetics here.

Dozens of shophouses are connected together, with long corridors in front of the shops linking the entire block. These provide shelter from the sun and rain for pedestrians while also serving as open, inviting spaces for shop owners to attract customers.
