Xiayang Island

Xiayang Island is located on the southeastern sea of Weizhou Island and was also formed by volcanic eruptions. It lies 9 nautical miles from Weizhou Island and 44 nautical miles from downtown Beihai, covering an area of 1.89 square kilometers. The island is named Xiayang (meaning “slanting sun”) because from Weizhou Island, one can watch the slanting sunlight shine over the entire island, and also because the island lies to the southeast of Weizhou Island, where the southern side faces the sun. Together with Weizhou Island, it is known as the “Greater and Lesser Penglai.”

The island is shaped like a blooming lotus, with a depression in the middle and raised edges. The air here is fresh and pleasant, and the coastal waters are crystal blue. There are many rare marine erosion, sedimentation, volcanic crater, and biological landscapes. The island is rich in vegetation, mainly featuring Masson pine and Acacia confusa trees. With dense forests and towering cliffs, it offers ample shade and is a hidden paradise perfect for exploration.

Over 2,000 Hakka people live on Xiayang Island. The locals are hospitable and maintain simple, traditional customs. There is no public market on the island, and no thieves. Any fish caught by residents that are not eaten are placed in the shallow waters by the shore for anyone to take as needed. Visiting Xiayang Island allows you to experience a lifestyle reminiscent of primitive simplicity.

Transportation

1. At the Weizhou Island pier, you can charter a boat to Xiayang Island. A speedboat with a capacity of around 10 passengers costs approximately 500–600 RMB for a round trip and takes about half an hour to reach the island.

2. Alternatively, you can rent a small fishing boat from the Weizhou Island pier, which costs around 200–300 RMB.

3. During holidays, the Beihai International Passenger Terminal operates the motorboat “Xiaopenglai” to Xiayang Island at 30 RMB per person. This service is rarely available on regular days.
