The convent was an affiliate institution of the Catholic diocese, established in the late 19th century on the right side of the Catholic church in Shengtang Village on Weizhou Island. Its main function was to train qualified nuns to help manage the various parishes within the diocese.

In 1925, the Catholic Church in Beihai constructed a new building for the convent in Beihai. By spring 1926, the convent moved from Weizhou to Beihai and continued operating until its closure in 1958.

Two buildings remain at the site of the former convent. One is a rectangular two-story building, measuring 31.45 meters in length and 8.7 meters in width. The other is a small chapel-like structure, 12.3 meters long and 6 meters wide. The total floor area of the two buildings is 347.4 square meters, and the main structures are relatively well-preserved. The site is currently used as a municipal government kindergarten. It stands as a historical testament to the French Catholic Church’s establishment of a convent in Beihai.
