"Impressions of 1876" Beihai Historical and Cultural Scenic Area

The "Impressions of 1876" Beihai Historical and Cultural Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The "Impressions of 1876" Beihai Historical and Cultural Scenic Area is located in the old town of Beihai, extending from the Guesthouse in the east to the Cultural Relics Courtyard in the west, and from the former site of the British Consulate in the south to Binhai Road in the north. Covering an area of approximately 0.03 square kilometers, the scenic area consists of cultural heritage sites such as the former British Consulate, former German Consulate, former German Simpon & Co., former French Consulate, former site of the Great Qing Post Office, and former site of the Beihai Customs Building, all interconnected by Liberation Road and Zhongshan Road.

In 1876, following the signing of the Sino-British Yantai Treaty, Beihai was designated as a treaty port. Subsequently, eight countries — including Britain, Germany, Austria-Hungary, France, Italy, Portugal, the United States, and Belgium — established a range of institutions in Beihai such as consulates, churches, hospitals, foreign trading companies, convents, and schools, constructing a series of Western-style buildings.

These architectural complexes are important relics that bear witness to China’s modern port-opening culture. They represent treasures of modern Chinese architecture and carriers of urban historical culture, hailed by historians and architects as an “architectural yearbook of the modern era,” possessing significant historical, cultural, and artistic value.

These buildings have become a hallmark in the historical development of Beihai. Preserving and utilizing them can further highlight the city’s regional culture and international exchange characteristics, aligning with the development direction of the national “Belt and Road” initiative.

While ensuring full protection of the heritage buildings and preservation of their historical appearance, the space environment is beautified to better realize the public and social value of these modern cultural relics.
