Gufeng Mountain Scenic Area is located 8 kilometers south of Wanrong County and is a tourist destination that integrates sightseeing, leisure entertainment, and religious culture. It is both a famous scenic mountain and a historic mountain. Developed with an investment of over 100 million yuan by Mr. Wang Chuangquan, former General Manager of Changzhi Iron and Steel Company, the currently open section is Phase I of the project.

Gufeng Mountain gets its name from its solitary and majestic rise from the ground. As this mountain stands alone without connecting to any other peaks, being the only grand and solitary mountain massif, it is also referred to as Asia’s “Pyramid.” Moreover, because the shape of the mountain looks the same from all directions—lacking the varying perspectives of “peaks from one side, ridges from another”—it has also earned the name “Square Mountain.” This is what makes the mountain unique. As Wei Runiu, Secretary of the Wanrong County Party Committee, once said, “Among the thousands of mountains in China, only this one dares to be called ‘solitary.’” The character “solitary” (孤) has historically been reserved for use only by the highest rulers, indicating the extraordinary status of this mountain.

The mountain covers a land area of 24 square kilometers, and including the surrounding hills and slopes, the total area reaches nearly 100 square kilometers. Its highest point is 1,411.2 meters above sea level. Historical “Eight Scenic Spots of Wanquan,” such as “Twin Springs Flowing Azure,” “Autumn Winds at Tang Fort,” “Evening Glow over the Cypress Grove,” “Spring Sentiments in Peach Cave,” “Carved Cliffs and Unified Snow,” “Distant Views Above the Dharma Clouds,” and “Moonlit Night at Fan Terrace” are all found within the area.

The scenery of Gufeng Mountain changes dramatically with the seasons. In the warm spring, mountain flowers bloom in vibrant colors; at the turn of spring and summer, apricot blossoms and pear flowers are as splendid as brocade and rosy clouds. In the sweltering heat of midsummer, the rustling of pine trees and the chirping of cicadas sound like zithers and flutes, while the dense shade offers cool and pleasant relief. Around mid-autumn, a thousand peaks compete in beauty, and forests are painted with layers of autumn hues. In the bitter cold of deep winter, the mountain is covered in snow, with ice crystals on branches and a silver-white world that resembles a fairyland.
