The Wanli River wild hot spring in Hualien is a “dynamic cave hot spring,” situated upstream of the Hualien River on the Wanli River. It emerged from a cave when Taiwan Power Company was excavating a water channel. Today, we’re heading to this dynamic cave hot spring, exploring along the way the ruins of the old “Gordon Railway,” crossing mountains and streams, and finally enjoying the naturally healing wild hot spring.

The Wanli River Hot Spring is also known as what locals call the “Mandarin Duck Valley Hot Spring.” It’s located on the Wanli River, upstream of the Hualien River. The spring water has a slightly brownish hue due to its rich iron content—even the nearby rocks have been stained brown, which is quite unique. Additionally, because the water temperature is not very high and is moderated by the stream, it’s even more suitable for soaking.

The Wanli River Hot Spring is also called Wanrong Hot Spring. In fact, it has existed since the Japanese colonial era. Located near the Lintianshan Forest, it was once a popular wild hot spring among loggers. Later, as the forestry industry in the Lintianshan area declined, the wild hot spring gradually faded from memory. Getting there is moderately challenging—about a one-hour walk—with beautiful scenery along the way, making it perfect for first-timers looking to explore wild hot springs.

We depart from Hualien Railway Station and head toward our first destination today—the forgotten Lintianshan Forestry Culture Park in Wanrong. From a path beside the park, we ascend along a mountain road, and amid the vast mountain landscape, we unexpectedly discover an old railway track.

This section is part of the Lintianshan Railway, originally built during the Japanese colonial era. Spanning nearly 60 kilometers, it once brought prosperity to Wanrong Village but has long disappeared from people’s memories after the forestry industry declined. A few steep sections along the way require climbing using both hands and feet.

After passing a Taiwan Power water-level monitoring platform, we reach the riverbed. From here, the trail involves wading through the stream. The pebbled riverbed and the fast-flowing waters of the Wanli River make this stretch a bit challenging. Along the way, you’ll see towering cliffs carved by the river’s erosion, with massive rocks scattered everywhere—it’s truly awe-inspiring.

The yellow-green mottled patterns on the rock face ahead are the result of hot spring erosion. Climbing up onto the large rocks beside the cliff, you’ll find the source pool of the hot spring, with water temperatures around 45°C. It’s a sodium bicarbonate spring, commonly known as “beauty spring.” Experts have dug pools in the riverbed and channeled water directly from the source. While enjoying the stunning surroundings of the Wanli River wild hot spring and the soothing soak, indulging in the secret dishes prepared by the experts is simply unforgettable.
