The Li Family Courtyard — A Unique Mansion of Wealth in Southern Shanxi The Li Family Courtyard, a grand merchant's mansion unique to southern Shanxi, is located in Yanjing Village, Wanrong County, about 38 kilometers north of Yuncheng City. To its west lies National Highway 209, to the east is Peach Blossom Valley, to the north rises the uniquely rugged Solitary Peak Mountain, and to the south unfolds the vast hundred-mile Salt Lake — making it a place of exceptional feng shui.

The Li Family Courtyard scenic area covers more than 1,000 acres with a built-up area exceeding 100,000 square meters. It consists of six main parts: the ancient architecture zone, the imitation ancient zone, the newly built zone, the service zone, the agricultural ecological park, and the Humor Expo Park. It is a multifunctional cultural tourism destination integrating dining, accommodation, sightseeing, entertainment, shopping, and fitness.

The Li Family Courtyard was first built during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty, nearly 200 years ago. Originally consisting of 20 courtyard complexes, 11 remain today, along with ancestral halls, gardens, and more. The entire complex features vertical-shaft courtyard layouts designed for wealth accumulation, while also incorporating Huizhou architectural styles that blend northern and southern Chinese building traditions. The ancient courtyards are arranged in an orderly fashion with distinct layers; they are grand in scale, built with robust materials, and boast a rigorously structured yet enduring framework. The courtyards offer excellent ventilation and lighting, are securely fortified, and feature exquisite and elegant decorations.

Traditional quadrangle courtyards gather energy and channel fortune, while grand entrance gates connect heaven and earth. The brick carvings, stone carvings, wood carvings, and wrought iron ornaments adorning the Li Family Courtyard buildings are infused with auspicious symbolism cherished by the folk of southern Shanxi: fertility and prosperity, the Three Stars shining bright, the Five Blessings descending, pine and crane symbolizing longevity, scholarship and farming passed through generations, wealth and peace. These elements vividly reflect the local customs, folkways, and cultural characteristics. Moreover, because Li Daoheng, the owner of the western courtyard, studied in Britain and married a British woman, Margaret MacLean, some sections of the complex exhibit European Gothic architectural styles, showcasing a unique artistic fusion of Chinese and Western cultures — making it a rare gem among China’s regionally distinctive residences.

Transportation Information Self-drive: Take G5 Beijing-Kunming Expressway toward Yuncheng, exit at Yuncheng, then drive approximately 38 kilometers along National Highway 209 toward Wanrong to reach Yanjing Village. Clear tourism signs are posted along the way. Bus: Take a bus headed for Hejin from Yuncheng Central Bus Station and get off at Yanjing Village. The journey takes about one hour.

Yanjing Village: Located in Gaocun Township, Yanjing Village sits at the southern gateway of Wanrong County. It is recognized as a provincial-level historical and cultural village/town, and is home to the nationally renowned Li Family Courtyard, the birthplace of the culture of kindness. The village has 9 residential groups, 600 farming households, 2,380 residents, over 500 migrant merchants, 600 students, and a total population of around 3,500. The town covers an area of 64 hectares, with a complex layout spanning a north-south distance of 3 kilometers.
