According to the draft of the *Duan County Annals* from the Republican era, the stone fortress was built in the 13th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1674) by Pan Rulu, the local Tusi (hereditary tribal chief) of Anding, for the purpose of “refining elixirs” inside the cave and taking refuge from potential uprisings by local residents. The cave interior is spacious and flat, featuring multiple stalagmites. About 60 meters down a slope lies a subterranean lake. With a diameter of around 20 meters, the lake water is clear as a mirror and remains unfailing throughout the year. Walking along the lakeside leads to the second level of the cave, where crystal-clear stalactite pillars stand densely, hanging from the ceiling. A poet of old once wrote: “After the Eight Immortals departed, the cave retained their fame; within lies a flat stone slab like a chessboard. Wang Zhi once played here, his axe handle rotted away, while a breeze drifts across the mountainside.”
