Phoenix Valley Forest Park

Phoenix Valley Forest Park is located on the shady side of the middle section of the Zhongtiao Mountain range, south of the Salt Lake, covering a total area of over 3,800 acres. Nestled against mountains and beside water, it consists of five natural gullies and is close to Yuncheng city proper. The park features dense primeval forests, rich vegetation, and is home to more than 200 species of wild plants and over 100 species of wild animals. It is a rare area of dense forest coverage in the middle section of the Zhongtiao Mountain and also the closest pristine forest park to an urban area in northern China.

The Zhongtiao Mountain range was formed approximately 50 million years ago during the Himalayan orogeny. Over the centuries, it has not only developed unique climatic conditions and distinctive landforms, but also, through the rise and fall of dynasties, has nurtured a profound cultural heritage and numerous legends. When Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, along with geomancers Yuan Tiangang and Li Chunfeng, surveyed the site for the Pool God Temple, they witnessed a celestial marvel: a colorful phoenix soaring above, prompting them to name the place “Phoenix Valley.”
