Located in Bolivia, the Uyuni Salt Flats are famed as the “Mirror of the Sky” and have quickly become a top travel destination for backpackers and influencers. In recent years, several other salt lakes in Western Australia have also gained significant popularity on social media. Through the lens of German photographer Kevin Krautgarner, these salt lakes transform into what looks like pastel paintings, evoking a sense of calm and softness.

Krautgarner titled this series of works featuring Western Australia’s salt lakes *Australian Salt*. He flew in a small aircraft and, through minimalism and abstract concepts, focused on capturing nature’s most captivating colors, shapes, and patterns. It’s hard to imagine that the scenes in his photos are actually salt production sites.

These man-made ponds extract salt crystals from seawater through solar evaporation. Depending on the concentration of algae and the salinity of the pond water, the ponds can display vibrant shades of blue and bright red, as well as soft hues of pink, blue, and green.

There are actually several pink lakes (Pink Lakes) in Western Australia. Lake Hillier, which enjoys considerable popularity on Instagram, is located on Middle Island in the Recherche Archipelago. Similarly, near the town of Esperance, there is another salt lake called Pink Lake.

Krautgarner’s main shooting locations are believed to be Hutt Lagoon and Useless Loop, both situated north of Perth. Aside from Useless Loop, which is a private facility, the other three salt lakes are open to visitors. Tourists can also take a small aircraft, just like Krautgarner, to view Hutt Lagoon from above. The flight lasts about one hour, and the cost is 230 Australian dollars (HK$1,265) per adult.

More of Kevin Krautgarner’s works can be found on his personal website and his Behance photo gallery.
