Jiulong Mountain Natural Scenic Area in Yuncheng is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

Yuncheng, Shanxi, located at the Golden Triangle of the Yellow River and the junction of Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Henan provinces, is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization. The three legendary ancestors of the Chinese nation—Yellow Emperor, Yan Emperor, and Chiyou—left behind many wonderful tales here; Yao, Shun, and Yu pioneered the origins of civilization here; and historical figures such as Liu Zongyuan, Guan Hanqing, and Guan Yu have left enduring legacies that shine brilliantly like stars.

Jiulong Mountain Natural Scenic Area is located in the hinterland of the Zhongtiao Mountains in Dongguo Town, Yanhu District, Yuncheng City, on the southern shore of Lake Yuncheng, at the intersection of the Yuncheng-Sanshui Expressway and the South Ring Expressway, 15 kilometers from the city center. Originally named Jiuli Mountain, it was named after Chiyou, the ancestor of the Miao-Li ethnic group. In front of the mountain stands a stone tablet erected in 1962 by the Yuncheng County People's Committee, inscribed with “Neolithic Site of Mohécun,” marking this area as a human settlement 7,000 years ago; a pottery kiln site on a hillside indicates a human settlement 5,000 years ago. The ancient salt road known as the “World’s No.1 Road”—Yuban Ancient Salt Road—is listed as part of the fourth batch of Shanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units. Additionally, remnants such as Chiyou’s tomb mound, Northern Wei Dynasty cliff carvings, Song Dynasty city walls, ancient beacon towers, and temples from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties are scattered throughout the area. Dongguo Town was named a Shanxi Provincial Civilized Small Town in 2004 and listed as a national pilot town for small-town construction in 2005.

Jiulong Mountain stands majestic and towering, with clouds steaming and rosy clouds glowing. A 10-kilometer-long deep valley features continuously flowing rivers and interconnected waterfalls and pools. Dozens of scenic spots such as “Three Pools Reflecting the Moon,” “Jiulong Waterfall,” “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon,” “Emerald Sea Islands,” “Yin-Yang Boundary,” and “Heavenly Path” are picturesque. Classic legends such as “The Gentleman of Dongguo and the Wolf,” “Third Mother Taming the Wolf,” “The Lama Stealing Treasure,” “Guan Yu Sharpening His Sword,” and “The Niu Family Courtyard” are widely known. The ancient Yuban Salt Road, chiseled by Yu during the time of Emperor Yao, was one of the “Four Great Highways” 4,000 years ago and also the essential “Sunlit Path” for the southern transport of Lu salt throughout the dynasties. The ancient Suoyang Pass served as the boundary pass between the states of Jin and Yu during the Spring and Autumn Period. Classic stories such as “Bole Appraising Horses,” “Borrowing Yu to Attack Guo,” “When Lips Are Gone, Teeth Will Be Cold,” and “No Horses Left in Northern Hebei” all took place here. The world’s earliest pre-Ming toll station—commonly known as “Waguang Temple,” the “Children’s Nest Stone Cave” reflecting Chinese fertility and love culture, and the “Tongzhen Stone Yin Stele” are all located here.

The Jiulong Mountain Natural Scenic Area boasts a pristine ecological environment, abundant tourism resources, and cultural landmarks. With convenient transportation and connections via expressways to the World’s No.1 Martial Temple—Guan Di Temple, the Dead Sea, and the Emperor Shun Mausoleum, it forms an integrated destination.
