Hedong Museum

Hedong Museum is located on Hongqi Road in Yuncheng City. Its construction was initiated in March 1979, and it was originally housed at the Guan Di Temple in Jiezhou. The new museum building was completed and officially opened to the public on October 1, 1986. It is a museum with distinctive local characteristics of Hedong, and is under the administration of the Yuncheng Cultural Relics Bureau. The museum faces south and covers an area of 10,655 square meters, with a building area of over 2,000 square meters. The overall layout is divided into front and rear sections: the front houses the exhibition and office areas, while the rear is the living quarters. Major structures include the traditional Chinese gatehouse, east and west wing rooms, a stele corridor, the exhibition hall building, the collection storage, and office buildings. The front courtyard features rockeries, ponds, shrubs, and unique stones, creating a pleasant environment. The traditional Chinese gatehouse was relocated from the Ming Dynasty-era Jingyi Pavilion of the former Yuncheng Confucian Temple; the 15-room stele corridor displays ancient epitaphs and stone carvings collected over the years, featuring many outstanding pieces. Among them, the “Dragon Gate Panoramic View” stone carving vividly depicts the former grandeur of Longmen.

The museum’s storage area spans 200 square meters. A total of more than 7,000 artifacts have been excavated or collected from the Hedong region, including 250 classified as precious cultural relics. These cover stoneware, bone tools, ceramics, bronze ware, jade artifacts, lacquerware, sculptures, ancient coins, calligraphy and paintings, embroidery, stone inscriptions, and more. The museum’s exhibition halls cover an area of 1,000 square meters. In recent years, the museum has hosted and introduced various exhibitions such as “The Soul of Red Crag” and “Stone Sarcophagus and Line Engraving Art Exhibition from the Tomb of Xue Jing in the Tang Dynasty.” The “Guan Yu Culture Exhibition” was exhibited in Taiwan in 1997; the “Exhibition of Fine Historic Stone Inscriptions from Hedong Through the Dynasties” was nominated for the Top Ten Exhibition Excellence Awards among national museums in the year 2000. The museum has also compiled and published several works, including the “Museum Journal,” “Historical Evolution of Yuncheng Region,” “Famous People and Scenic Spots of Yuncheng Region,” “Selected Historical Accounts of Hedong Through the Dynasties,” “Highlights of Hedong Cultural Relics,” and “Man, God, and Saint — Guan Yu.” Nearly 100 academic articles have been included in publications released domestically and internationally and published in newspapers and periodicals at all levels. In 1995, it was designated as a Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the Shanxi Provincial Committee and Provincial Government.
