Xinxiao Ancient Village is a cultural heritage site protected by Guangdong Province.

Xinxiao Village can be described as an ancient village blessed with talented individuals and a spiritually rich environment. During the late Qing Dynasty, the Huang Guoxiang brothers achieved the remarkable feat of “three scholars from one family,” which also gave rise to a distinctive local delicacy—Stir-Fried Raw Rice (生炒朥饭). This dish is made by stir-frying raw rice together with various ingredients such as pork, squid, mushrooms, tofu, and scallions, then adding water and simmering until cooked. It has a deliciously savory, rich flavor, with each grain of rice remaining distinct and offering a pleasantly firm yet tender bite. It is said that Stir-Fried Raw Rice is also known as “Scholar’s Rice,” as it served as a hearty meal for Wu Guoxiang, a scholar from Xinxiao, after his martial arts training to replenish his strength. This also indirectly reflects the Teochew saying: “Poverty for scholars, wealth for martial artists.”

Since ancient times, Xinxiao Village has been known for producing both scholarly and martial talents. Its main architectural styles reflect traditional Chaoshan designs, such as “Three Halls and One Courtyard,” “Three Streets and Six Lanes,” and “Downhill Tiger” layouts. Historical records indicate that in the sixth year of the Wanli era during the Ming Dynasty, Huang Xinxing from Tangwei Village in Raoping brought his father’s remains here to seek a feng shui-rich location and relocated. The following year, the Zhang family also moved from Raoping, while the Lin family arrived in 1956 due to the construction of a reservoir. When the Huang and Zhang families arrived, the village was already inhabited by several other clans, who later transferred their properties to the Huang and Zhang families and relocated elsewhere. Together, the Huang and Zhang families demolished the old huts and built new residences, hence the name “New Huts,” or Xinxiao. In 2012, it was listed among Guangdong Province’s Ancient Villages. Today, the village preserves many ancient fortresses, ancestral halls, and traditional houses.

The village is distributed in a clustered block pattern, with most buildings being stone-and-timber structures with tiled roofs. It is a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese, with around four to five thousand overseas Chinese and an equivalent number of dependents. National Highway 206 and the Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway run through the area, and the Yuhu Expressway entrance is located right in front of the village.

Introduction to Xinxiao Village, Yuhu Town: Xinxiao Village in Yuhu Town is located in the northwest of Jiedong County. Both National Highway G206 and the Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway run through the village, and the Yuhu Expressway interchange is situated at the village entrance, giving it a geographically advantageous and well-connected transportation network. The village currently covers an area of 5 square kilometers, with 1,922.3 mu of arable land and 4,266 mu of mountainous terrain.
