Tomb of Sun Momo

The Tomb of Sun Momo is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The Tomb of Sun Momo, commonly known as the Tomb of the Three Noble Daughters, is located on Mianlong Mountain in Shayi Village, Shaxi Town, Chao’an County. The tomb faces northeast and features a stele pavilion and an offering pavilion, both constructed from massive granite blocks. The stele pavilion has four pillars grounded directly into the earth, with a roof made of several large stone slabs. The inscription on the stele is carved on the central back wall of the pavilion, reading “Tomb of the late Ming’s scholar-official Sun Momo and his venerable wife Lady Lin.” About 10 meters in front of the stele pavilion stands the grand and majestic offering pavilion, which has a three-bay structure, approximately three meters deep and about 10 meters wide. Eight stone pillars support the stone beams, each pillar standing over four meters tall. The entire roof is covered with granite slabs, each slab measuring 3 to 4 square meters.

The Tomb of Sun Momo is commonly referred to as the “Tomb of the Three Noble Daughters.” Legend has it that Sun Momo had no sons, only three daughters, but each married a man of high status: the eldest daughter married Weng Wanda, Minister of War; the second daughter married Chen Yisong, Vice Minister of Works; and the third daughter married Lin Dajin, the top imperial scholar. Hence, the name “Tomb of the Three Noble Daughters.”

In 1987, the Chaozhou Municipal People's Government designated it as a cultural relics protection unit. In 2012, the Guangdong Provincial People's Government listed it as a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Shaxi Town: Located at the northern foot of the Sangpu Mountains in the southwestern part of Chaozhou City, Shaxi Town lies at the junction of Chaozhou, Shantou, and Jieyang. It covers a total area of 37.0 square kilometers, governs 17 village committees and one neighborhood committee, with a total population of 55,200. In 2002, the town achieved a combined industrial and agricultural output value of 784 million yuan, industrial and commercial tax revenue of 3.47 million yuan, and an average per capita rural income of 3,717 yuan.
