Ma’yu Island

Located at the mouth of Shantou Port, the island covers an area of one square kilometer. It features a beach bathing area and accommodation facilities. Facing the open sea, the waters here are clean, making it a popular summer retreat for locals.

The island is home to two Tianhou Temples, built during the Yuan and Qing dynasties respectively, hence the name “Ma’yu” (literally “Mother’s Isle”). It is also known as “Chicken-Releasing Island,” as in the old days, ships passing through would release a live chicken at the Tianhou Temple as an offering. Over time, the island became a haven for chickens. In 1860, the British established a customs house here and carried out brutal exploitation of the local area. It was also a key site for colonialists trafficking laborers. Many people died from torture before even boarding the ships, and a large number of laborer skeletons have been unearthed on the island, serving as stark evidence of imperialist aggression against China.

The highest point on the island is 41 meters above sea level and serves as a natural pier for the Bay Bridge. A giant statue of Guanyin is also located on the mountain.

Transportation: Take a ferry from Renmin Square Pier, which takes about 20 minutes to reach the island.

Within the city, you can take bus No. 8 to Aotou Station, then take a taxi to the Bay Bridge. There is a ferry terminal under the bridge that offers services to Ma’yu Island, with fares around 6 yuan.
