The “Gratitude to Hatta, Peaceful Parade” event grandly kicks off in Xilaya on March 13

During the Japanese colonial period, Engineer Hatta Yoichi built the Wushantou Reservoir and the Chianan Irrigation System, turning barren land into fertile fields, for which farmers were deeply grateful. During the construction of the reservoir, the massive project inevitably led to casualties, and Engineer Hatta and his wife often visited Chishan Longhu Rock to pray for the smooth progress of the project and the safety of the workers. To express gratitude for the blessings of the Buddha and to coincide with the upcoming completion of the Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park, the Siraya National Scenic Area will hold a parade and prayer event on March 13, inviting the public to join in the celebration.

The prayer parade begins at Cisheng Temple in Guantian, first heading to Chishan Longhu Rock to fetch holy water in gratitude to Guanyin’s blessings, then proceeding to the Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park to honor the engineer’s contributions. On the return route, it will visit six villages, praying to Guanyin, the deities, and the spirit of Engineer Hatta and his wife in heaven to bless farmers with abundant harvests and peace throughout the region.

348 years ago, Chen Yonghua, Military Advisor to the Ming Zheng regime, reclaimed Chishan Fort (now the Liujia area of Guantian) and established Chishan Longhu Rock, enshrining Guanyin to bring peace to the people. The 22 villages within Chishan Fort have taken turns welcoming Guanyin back to their villages to watch performances each year in the second lunar month for over 300 years, expressing gratitude for her protection. This year, coinciding with the newly carved statue of Shennong Dadi at Guantian Cisheng Temple, the ancient tradition is being revived. Following the incense routes walked by ancestors over 300 years ago, a consecration ceremony and water-inviting ritual will be held at Chishan Longhu Rock.
