Nan’ao Wind Farm

Nan’ao, located at the intersection of Fujian and Guangdong provinces and the southwestern edge of the Taiwan Strait’s trumpet-shaped mouth, is known as China’s famous “wind cabinet.” Measurements show that the average annual wind speed in the Nan’ao wind field is 8.54 meters per second, with over 7,000 hours of effective wind speed annually, ranking among the best wind conditions in the world. The conditions for developing a wind power farm are exceptionally favorable. In 1989, relevant engineers began developing a high-altitude wind farm on Nan’ao, initially installing three wind turbines from Sweden. By 1998, there were 111 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of over 40,000 kilowatts, making it a key demonstration site for global wind energy development. On mountaintops over 400 meters above sea level, towering white columns can be seen standing on majestic peaks such as King Mountain, Songling Mountain, Zhulishan Mountain, and Hulu Mountain, with giant wind turbine blades spinning in the wind—a spectacular sight.
