Former Residence of Deng Zhongxia

The former residence of Deng Zhongxia is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The former residence of Deng Zhongxia is located in Dengjiawan Village, Taipingli Township, Yizhang County, Chenzhou City.

Deng Zhongxia (1895–1933) was born here on October 5, 1895. In 1907, he attended Zhangqiao Primary School in his hometown. In 1911, he transferred to Yizhang County Higher Primary School. In the summer of 1915, he was admitted to the Hunan Higher Normal School, where he met Mao Zedong and Cai Hesen in Changsha. In 1917, he enrolled in the Chinese Department of Peking University and participated in organizing the May Fourth Movement in 1919. In August, he returned to Yizhang to promote the May Fourth Movement and the Russian October Revolution among revolutionary teachers and students, spreading Marxism. In October 1920, under the leadership of Li Dazhao, Deng Zhongxia, together with Zhang Guotao, Cai Hesen, and other progressive activists, established an early Communist organization in Beijing. He was involved in the preparations for the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China. He organized and planned strikes by workers at Changxindian, Kailuan Coal Mine, and the Beijing-Hankou Railway, and also helped lead the world-renowned Canton–Hong Kong strike. He served as an alternate and full member of the Central Committee during the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th National Congresses of the CPC. In 1927, he attended the August 7th Meeting of the CPC Central Committee and was elected an alternate member of the Provisional Politburo. In May 1933, while working in Shanghai, he was arrested by the Kuomintang authorities. He was martyred at Yuhuatai, Nanjing, in September of the same year at the age of 39.

The residence is a typical example of southern Hunan residential architecture, featuring one main hall and four rooms. The central room serves as the living room, used for dining and receiving guests. The front room of the left wing was the residence of Deng’s uncle and aunt, while the back room was where Deng Zhongxia lived after marrying his first wife, Yang Xianhuai, in 1925. It now displays items once used by Deng, including a carved canopy bed, embroidered quilt, chests, and wardrobes. The front room of the right wing was the residence of Deng’s parents, and the back room was where his elder brother and sister-in-law lived. The residence covers an area of 132.9 square meters and is a two-story brick-and-wood structure with blue bricks and tiles.

In 1994, during the centennial commemoration of Deng Zhongxia’s birth, Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the State, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, inscribed the plaque “Former Residence of Deng Zhongxia.”

The former residence of Deng Zhongxia was designated as a Hunan Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the People’s Government of Hunan Province in January 1996, and as a Hunan Provincial Patriotic Education Base by the Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee in January 1995.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) listed the former residence of Deng Zhongxia as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

A native of Yizhang County, Hunan Province, Deng was born in October 1894 in Dengjiawan Village, Taipingli Township, Yizhang County. Taipingli Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Yizhang County. It belonged to Jincheng Township in 1949, Jincheng District in 1950, was established as Taiping Township in 1956, reorganized as a commune in 1958, and changed to Taipingli Township in 1984. Located in the northeastern part of the county, it is 11 kilometers northeast of the county seat. Covering an area of 67 square kilometers with a population of 14,000, the township government is based in Taiziwan. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway double track runs through the area. It administers ten village committees: Changping, Rao Tian, Taipingli, Hukou, Dengjiawan, Xiaoshui, Laogu, Xiaoxi, Yongkou, and Tangxia, as well as the Taipingli Neighborhood Committee.
