Dongjiang Dam

Dongjiang Dam is the first double-curvature thin-shell arch dam designed and built independently in China. The dam stands 157 meters high, with a crest thickness of 7 meters and a central arc length of 438 meters at the crest. The normal water level is at an elevation of 285 meters. One dam tames the Dongjiang River, creating a vast lake amid towering gorges. Located on the upper reaches of the Lei River, a tributary of the Xiang River, Dongjiang Dam is a hydropower project primarily for power generation, with additional benefits such as flood control and navigation. The river-blocking dam is a concrete double-curvature thin-shell arch structure. The dam site is situated in the upper section of the Dongjiang Gorge. It stands 157 meters high, 35 meters wide at the base, 7 meters wide at the crest, with a central arc length of 438 meters at the crest and a normal water level at an elevation of 285 meters. The mountains on both banks rise over 500 meters above the dam.

The dam features a novel structure, elegant design, and majestic presence. As a double-curvature thin-shell arch dam, it ranks third in the world and second in Asia among similar types of dams, making it the most spectacular man-made landmark in the Dongjiang Lake Scenic Area.
