The Bitter Bamboo River Grand Canyon is located in the upper reaches of the Lishui River, in the western part of Zhangjiajie City in northwestern Hunan Province. It is 35 kilometers from downtown Zhangjiajie, 65 kilometers north of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, and adjacent to Kuzhu Village and Jiutian Cave to the west, extending from Kuzhu Village to Daxikang Chenjiahe.

Located at a mid-latitude, it has a mid-subtropical mountainous monsoon humid climate. The average temperature is 16.8°C, with the coldest month (January) averaging 5.1°C and the hottest month (July) averaging 28°C. The extreme high temperature over the years is 40.7°C, and the extreme low is -15.5°C. Annual rainfall is 1381.9 mm, with 154.5 rainy days, about 110 of which occur during the daytime. Influenced by monsoons, the foothills experience distinct seasons—long winters, short summers, mild and cool weather—and a frost-free period of 268 days, making it suitable for year-round tourism. There are approximately 260 comfortable touring days per year. The water system of the Bitter Bamboo River scenic area is mainly composed of the Bitter Bamboo River, with tributaries such as the Bitter Bamboo River and Yishi River. The river features numerous rapids and shoals, with an average width of 30–50 meters and a depth of 5–7 meters, offering crystal-clear visibility. The long-term average flow rate is 146–168 cubic meters per second. The river has a gentle gradient, stretching about 50 kilometers from the Bitter Bamboo River to Daxikang Chenjiahe, with an elevation drop of 64 meters. The Bitter Bamboo River Grand Canyon is 5 kilometers from downtown Zhangjiajie, 39 kilometers from the Bitter Bamboo River rafting put-in point, and 18 kilometers from the take-out point.

The banks of the Bitter Bamboo River are primarily characterized by karst landforms, along with sandstone cliff and peak forest formations. According to geological surveys, the area around the Bitter Bamboo River, Wentang, and Luotaping features a northeast-trending structure, composed of the Qing’anping–Yangjiawan synclinal structure. The core of the anticline exposes the Cambrian Louguanshan Group, while the core of the syncline consists of the Triassic Dazhi Formation, a marine carbonate rock formation, with main rock types including limestone, dolomite, and marl. There are thousands of karst caves along the riverbanks. In areas such as Zhuma Stream, Shuangfeng Cliff, and Hanxi Gully in Luotaping Township, the rock layers are Silurian-Devonian quartz sandstones. After prolonged erosion by wind, rain, and the cutting action of streams, they exhibit landscapes reminiscent of Zhangjiajie’s quartz sandstone peak forests.

Take a boat to admire the “Hundred-Mile Gallery” scenery along both banks of the Bitter Bamboo River, and enjoy Tujia ethnic song and dance performances by the boatmen. Along the way, towering cliffs and bizarre rock formations create a dramatic landscape, featuring attractions such as Monkey Fishing for the Moon, Blood Gate Gully, Printed Wall, and Clothes-Drying Pole. The legend of the Tujia hero Qin Houwang weaves through the entire journey. Free admission to the Red Army Village in Kuzhu Village, a settlement built during the Tang and Song dynasties that was once a bustling commercial wharf.
