The Yaotou Ancient City Ruins are a protected cultural heritage site of Hunan Province.

Yaotou Mountain Ancient City Ruins

Dating back to the Warring States period, the Yaotou Ancient City site is located in Qianzhongjun Village (formerly Yaotou Village), Yuanling Town, and is suspected to have been the seat of the Qianzhong Commandery established by the Qin Dynasty.

The city borders the Yuan River, stretching 1,450 meters in length and 95 meters in width, covering an area of approximately 90,000 square meters. The rammed earth city walls and moat still remain, and cultural layers are found within the city. Trial excavations have unearthed tube tiles, li tripods, jars, dou vessels, roof tiles, and tile ends. A large number of Warring States-period tombs are located outside the city. Historical records indicate that the Qianzhong Commandery was established here in the 24th year of the reign of Qin Shi Huang (224 BCE). Based on the discovered relics and surrounding tombs, it is inferred that the city was built during the Warring States period and abandoned during the Western Han Dynasty. Whether it was indeed the seat of the Qianzhong Commandery still awaits confirmation through large-scale archaeological excavation.

On January 4, 1996, the People's Government of Hunan Province designated it as a provincial-level cultural heritage site, with the reference number 59-14.

In 2019, the Yaotou Ancient City Ruins were included in the eighth batch of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites.
