The Sifangcheng Site in Baojing

The Sifangcheng Site in Baojing is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

In the fifth year of Emperor Gaozu of Han, Qianling County was established. It came to be known as Sifangcheng (Square City) because the county town had a square shape. Unearthed artifacts include short swords, halberds, and mountain-patterned bronze mirrors from the Warring States period; bronze basins and utensils from the Han Dynasty; and porcelain from the Yuan Dynasty. The site still remains today.

The Sifangcheng Site is located in Yaoba Village, Qianling Town, Baojing County, on the northern bank of the middle reaches of the You River. The total area of the site exceeds 2 million square meters. The entire site area includes the Sifangcheng Site, a Han Dynasty bronze smelting site, a Warring States grain storage pit site, and a cluster of tombs from the Warring States and Han periods. The Sifangcheng Site was initially built during the Warring States period and continued through the Tang and Song dynasties. It contains rich and precious underground relics, serving as important material evidence and historical data for studying the culture of local indigenous peoples, as well as the relationship between the Chu and Ba cultures of the Warring States period, Tusi culture, and even how the Chinese nation evolved into a diverse yet unified whole. It holds significant academic value for researching the political, military, economic, cultural, and ethnic histories of the Dongting Commandery during the Qin Dynasty, the Wuling Commandery during the Han Dynasty, and the You River basin.

Qianling Town: Qianling Town is located in the central-northern part of the eastern region of Baojing County. It borders Zejia Town of Yongshun County and Hexi Town of Guzhang County to the east, adjoins Yangchao Township to the south, connects with Fuxing Town to the west, and lies adjacent to Puyong Town and Wanmipo Town to the north. It covers a total area of 167 square kilometers, with the highest elevation at 847 meters and the lowest at 170 meters. The area has a subtropical monsoon humid climate, featuring pleasant weather, abundant rainfall, and distinct seasons. The town governs 14 administrative villages and has a population of 73,000, including 27,000 agricultural residents. It serves as the political, economic, cultural, and transportation hub of Baojing County. The town government is located at No. 9 Zhengxing Road.
