Tomb of the Revolutionary Martyrs of the 1911 Uprising
The Tomb of the Revolutionary Martyrs of the 1911 Uprising is a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.
The Tomb of the Revolutionary Martyrs of the 1911 Uprising is located halfway up the mountain between the South Ninth and South Tenth Sections of the Biandan Mountain Cemetery in Hanyang. After climbing over 180 stone steps, you will see a cemetery enclosed by bluestone slabs. The cemetery gate covers an area of 510 square meters. The gate tower is inscribed with “Tomb of the Revolutionary Martyrs of the 1911 Uprising.” Behind the cemetery, green cypresses line the slope. Inside the cemetery stand four tomb mounds and steles, engraved with 15 characters written by Li Yuanhong in the second year of the Republic of China (1913): “Tomb of the Martyrs Who Fell in the Uprising of the Hubei Army with Iron and Blood Spirit.” This cemetery was built by the Republican government in honor of the soldiers who fought bravely and sacrificed their lives during the Defense of Yangxia in the early days of the 1911 Revolution. It was first built in 1913 at Bugan Pavilion (a hexagonal pavilion) at the southwestern foot of Turtle Mountain. In 1955, due to the construction of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, it was relocated to Biandan Mountain. In 1956, it was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.
