West Street, Wuhan

West Street is located in Hanyang District, Wuhan, bordering Xianzheng Street to the east and adjacent to Guiyuan Temple to the west. It is divided into eastern and western sections by Yingwu Avenue. This fading old street was once the liveliest part of Hanyang City. Entering West Street means stepping into Zhongcheng, an area that used to be primarily inhabited by merchants.

The old buildings on the street have disappeared, and the former bustle has faded away. Nowadays, what attracts people the most is probably the wall covered in graffiti. But this isn’t graffiti in the usual modern sense — these are all hand-painted with brushes and paint. The artworks depict scenes from West Street, ranging from old rickshaws to today’s down jackets and snack shops, rendered in meticulous detail. Nowadays, as we walk along West Street, it’s only through these walls of paintings that we can still sense the street’s former vibrancy.
