The theatre is situated by Moon Lake and the Han River, facing the ancient Guqin Platform built during the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli era across the lake to the south. As the core component of the Moon Lake Cultural Art Theme Park, it will become Wuhan’s highest-grade cultural performance venue and was the main venue for the 8th China Art Festival in 2007. The Qintai Grand Theatre has a total construction area of 65,650 square meters, consisting of a 1,802-seat comprehensive grand theatre, a multifunctional hall with about 400 seats, along with multiple performance service facilities such as art exhibition halls, rehearsal rooms, and restaurants. The main theatre adopts a traditional "pǐ" (品)-shaped stage, with a proscenium opening 18 meters wide and 12 meters high. The total depth of the stage is 50 meters, and its width is 72 meters. It features an orchestra pit divided into two parts, covering an area of 92 m² and capable of accommodating 120 musicians. The theatre is fully equipped to host a wide range of artistic performances including large-scale musicals, operas, ballets, song-and-dance dramas, plays, and concerts. The multifunctional hall stage measures 26 meters long, 16 meters wide, and 11 meters high, with 14 lifting platforms that can be configured in various combinations to create six different theatre formats: small theatre, conference hall, “protruding” stage, “T”-shaped stage, central stage, and flat hall. The coordination between stage equipment above and below allows for countless combination modes, offering tremendous creative possibilities and meeting the requirements for all kinds of operas, musicals, plays, traditional Chinese operas, and concerts, both domestically and internationally. Construction of the grand theatre began in May 2004 and was completed in August 2007. It was funded by the Wuhan Municipal Government with an investment of 1.57 billion RMB. The theatre covers a land area of 24,543 square meters and has a total construction area of 65,650 square meters, with 4 underground levels and 6 above-ground levels, reaching a building height of 40 meters. The main theatre has 1,802 seats, placing it among the largest of its kind in China. The architectural design of the theatre spans over 20 specialized fields and is recognized as one of the most challenging in the construction industry. The Qintai Grand Theatre is currently the only major theatre in China designed entirely by Chinese professionals—the Guangdong Zhujiang Design Institute won the international design competition. For architects, designing a grand theatre is the honor of a lifetime. Wuhan Real Estate Group, which had never previously undertaken a theatre project, overcame numerous technical and construction challenges. On the Qintai Grand Theatre project, they set several national records and achieved leading standards in construction quality, speed, and cost control. The theatre’s appearance evokes the flowing rhythm of piano keys, the graceful sweep of traditional sleeves, the historical weight of bronze panels, and the dominant red tone of the main auditorium—all of which immerse visitors in the rich culture of the Chu region. Initially, some experts worried that the bold use of red would be overwhelming. However, not long ago, the chief color consultant to the architect of the National Centre for the Performing Arts visited Wuhan and endorsed the colour scheme of the main theatre. Other experts have described it as “soul-stirring.” Recently, many visiting leaders, academicians, and experts have reached a consensus: the Qintai Grand Theatre rivals the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Shanghai Grand Theatre, and Guangzhou Opera House, filling a gap in high-quality cultural facilities in Central China. A modern grand theatre is an essential piece of infrastructure for any international city. Such a theatre must embody three key attributes: international functionality, national design identity, and public-friendly accessibility.
