Xianzheng Street Catholic Church

Xianzheng Street Catholic Church is located on Xianzheng Street in Hanyang District, Wuhan. Built in 1936, it is the largest and most beautiful church in old Hanyang. It is a remnant of the Catholic Saint Columban Society in Wuhan and the most eye-catching European-style building on Xianzheng Street. At the center of the only altar inside the church stands a statue of Saint Columban, the church’s patron saint, giving this church a particularly distinctive appearance compared to others. As a result, it is referred to within the Church as Saint Columban Church.

The church is over 50 meters long and about 15 meters wide, with its entrance facing north. It features an Irish Basilica architectural style. The central nave has a pointed roof, atop which rises a tall cross, and beneath the words “Catholic Church” is an exquisite rose window; on either side stand symmetrical square towers, giving off a slight air of Notre-Dame de Paris. Inside, there are three aisles with high arches, sleek lines, and a clean, majestic feel, accommodating over 500 people for Mass at the same time.
