Golden Bull Cave

Golden Bull Cave is located on "Golden Bull Mountain" in Bianjiawan Village, Banqiao Town, Nanzhang County. It lies to the east of Yichang and to the west of Shennongjia, approximately 100 kilometers from Xiangyang City and 120 kilometers from Yichang City.

The "Golden Bull Cave" is a natural cave. According to research, it was formed over tens of thousands of years ago due to crustal fissures. The cave consists of five sub-caves, with large caves enclosing smaller ones, all interconnected. Its extensive tunnel system, vast scenic area, and numerous attractions are rare within the province and unique to Xiangyang. To date, four caves have been explored, spanning approximately 3,000 meters in length, with the highest point around 1,010 meters and the widest section about 50 meters. There are four levels of terraces, each ranging between 20 to 40 meters, covering a total area of about 10,000 square meters.

The four explored caves comprise five scenic areas with over 200 attractions. The first scenic area is the Paradise Hall, which is 150 meters long, 30 meters wide, and 80 meters high. It features over 30 attractions such as Ten Thousand Clouds Like Cotton, Pillar Supporting the Sky, and Nine Heavens Waterfall. The second scenic area is the Beast Hall, 400 meters long, 80 meters wide, and 100 meters high, with more than 70 attractions including Zhang Fei Beating the Drum, Lion Roaring to the Sky, Golden Bull Returning to the Realm, and Eagle Peering into the Nest. The third scenic area is the Immortals' Gathering Terrace, 150 meters long, 30 meters wide, and 70 meters high, featuring over 70 attractions such as Water Curtain Cave, Jade Maiden Playing the Flute, and Pagoda Peak Cluster. The fourth scenic area is the Immortals' Assembly Tower, with over 50 attractions like Seven Wolves and Monkey Fishing for the Moon. The fifth scenic area has over 70 attractions including Stone Drum, Stone Mushroom, and Sea Turns into Mulberry Fields.

Golden Bull Cave is known for being “unique, large, peculiar, and perilous.” “Unique” refers to its special and distinctive attractions, with the largest being several dozen meters high and the smallest just a few centimeters. Opposite the cave entrance stands the eye-catching “Five Peaks Fort,” while on the north side of the cave there is the natural landscape feature “City Wall Rock.” The surrounding area boasts lush green mountains and trees. “Large” means the scenic area is expansive, with each section offering relatively broad spaces that can accommodate 80,000 to 100,000 people. The air inside the cave is fresh, making the experience feel like entering a fairyland. “Peculiar” refers to the extraordinary attractions—stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes on the cave ceiling, walls, and floor. Some resemble birds and beasts, others famous figures or historical events, and some draw from myths and legends, presenting a vivid and diverse array of forms. “Perilous” describes the cave’s rugged terrain and dramatic drops. Looking down into the cave depths is awe-inspiring. A cave corridor could be built between the fourth and second scenic areas, and there is a naturally formed underground passage between the fifth and second scenic areas.

Banqiao Town enjoys a mild climate, being warm in winter and cool in summer.
