Kaifeng Museum was established in March 1962. It originated from the Henan Provincial Museum, which moved to Zhengzhou, and was officially founded on its former site at Sansheng Street. Due to the dilapidated condition of the original building, which could not accommodate various operational needs, the museum chose its current location and expanded into the new building in 1986. The new museum is located on Baofukeng Middle Road in Kaifeng City, Henan Province. It was completed in September 1988 and officially opened to the public, marking a significant cultural event in Kaifeng. In 2007, the municipal government funded indoor and outdoor renovation projects, greatly improving the exhibition environment and standards. The introduction of several high-tech display methods has significantly enriched the exhibition content. Kaifeng Museum is a local historical and art museum in China.

The new museum is located on the serene and picturesque southern shore of Bao Gong Lake, complementing the nearby Bao Gong Temple across the lake, forming a renowned cultural and artistic treasure and tourist destination in the Bao Gong Lake Scenic Area. The museum covers a total area of 16,000 square meters, with the main building spanning over 7,000 square meters. It features an antique "mountain"-shaped structure with a single-eave hip-and-gable roof, covered in yellow glazed tiles, exuding elegance, solemnity, grandeur, and magnificence. The exhibition building occupies over 5,000 square meters, with a four-story central hall, three-story front exhibition halls, and two-story side exhibition halls, totaling 13 exhibition rooms. The cultural relics warehouse spans 1,500 square meters, housing a collection of over 80,000 artifacts, nearly 50,000 professional books, all of which are extremely precious. It is one of the largest municipal-level museums in Henan Province.

Kaifeng Museum is a social history and art museum that has collected a large number of valuable cultural relics for the nation over the decades. Among its current collection of 80,000 items, there are 18 categories including pottery, porcelain, bronzeware, calligraphy and paintings, carvings, stone inscriptions, currency, jade artifacts, lacquerware, clothing, and miscellaneous items. It possesses several national treasure-level relics, dozens of first-grade relics, and over 1,000 second-grade relics. Some are the only ones in existence, while others are unique in China, such as the stone inscriptions “Record of Names of Officials at Kaifeng Prefecture,” “Kaifeng Jewish Stone Inscriptions” (three pieces: the Record of the Reconstruction of the Mosque, from the second year of the Hongzhi reign in the Ming Dynasty; the Record of the Revered Taoist Scripture Temple, from the seventh year of the Zhengde reign in the Ming Dynasty; and the Genealogy Tablet Inscription of the Ancestral Hall from the 18th year of the Kangxi reign in the Qing Dynasty), the Jiayou Bilingual Stone Classics, and the Record of Jurchen Scholar-Officials’ Names, all of which are extremely valuable.

At the same time, Kaifeng Museum also organizes exhibitions closely aligned with current themes and social issues, as well as science popularization exhibitions, which have garnered significant attention from all sectors of society and contributed to the cultural development of Kaifeng.

Closed on Mondays; Tuesday–Sunday: 9:00–12:00, 14:30–17:30 (Due to construction work at the new Kaifeng Museum site (located at the intersection of Zhengkai Avenue and Sixth Street), the old Kaifeng Museum site (located by Bao Gong Lake, No. 26 Yingbin Road) has ceased public visits. The opening hours of the new museum will be announced separately.)
