Ge’yubao

Ge’yubao was first built in the early Tang Dynasty. Before the An Lushan Rebellion, An Lushan constructed the Xiongwu Army City here and stationed troops, earning it the reputation of “Ge’yubao came before Xuanhua City.”

The city wall of Ge’yubao is 4 kilometers in circumference, 3 zhang 6 chi (approximately 12 meters) high, with gates on the west and south sides, as well as a barbican. At that time, looking down at Ge’yubao from the mountains, the area glowed a shining red, resembling a piece of red tung wood, giving rise to the saying “Copper-like Ge’yubao, stone-like Yangfang, and pig-iron-poured Xiaobaiyang.” Outside the city were the general’s platform and military drill grounds, while inside were government offices such as the Circuit Intendant’s Court and the Military Commander’s Office. Temples and monasteries stood in great numbers, creating an unprecedented prosperity that could rival that of Xuanhua City.
