Xuanhua Wanliu Park

Situated on the east bank of Liuchuan River, west of the western city wall in Xuanhua District, this area was once a wooded tract dominated by willow trees. The park covers an area of 40 hectares and is master-planned as "One Lake and Ten Scenes," including attractions such as Flower Harbor Fish Viewing, Crabapple Spring Cove, Liuchuan Sunset Glow, Maple Ridge Layers, Winding Pond Lotus Breeze, and Ancient Path Serenity. The design of Wanliu Park encapsulates the essence of classic Jiangnan gardens, creating picturesque lakes and mountain vistas. It serves mainly for sightseeing, appreciation, and leisure, while also recreating the historic splendor of the "Ten Thousand Willows of Liuchuan."

Liuchuan River is located outside the west gate of the ancient city of Xuanhua. From the late Yuan Dynasty to the early Ming Dynasty, every year after the spring thaw and before autumn, fierce northwest winds blew, and the endless yellow sand turned the riverbanks into a sandy desert, causing great suffering to local residents. In the ninth year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty, to block the damage caused by wind and sand, local people built embankments and planted trees around Liuchuan River—planting tens of thousands of willow trees alone. The rows of willows created a spectacular sight, forming the renowned scenery of "Ten Thousand Willows of Liuchuan."

In 2006, the Xuanhua District government invested 80 million yuan to begin constructing Wanliu Park. Designed according to the concept of "One Lake, One Street, and Ten Scenes" — including attractions such as Flower Harbor Fish Viewing, Liuchuan Sunset Glow, Maple Ridge Layers, and Ancient Path Serenity — the park spans 40.1 hectares, with a water surface area of 21,000 square meters. Centered around the expansive Wanliu Lake, the park features islets, mounds, and long causeways, creating a natural landscape garden characterized by its waterscapes and reminiscent of a water town, thus earning its reputation as the "Little Jiangnan of Western Beijing." A distinctive feature of this garden is its open design: there are no high walls, only one-meter-high stainless steel railings separating it from the surrounding roads. Wanliu Park, Liuchuan River, and the ancient city wall at Daxin Gate form a cohesive and harmonious whole, showcasing the new charm of the ancient city of Xuanhua.
