Xiashan Wetland Park
Xiashan Wetland Park is a national AA-level tourist attraction.
Xiashan Wetland Park enjoys a unique location at the confluence of major rivers flowing into Xiashan Lake upstream. The park mainly consists of river wetlands such as those of the Wei River, Wu River, and Qu River, lake wetlands of Xiashan Lake, marsh wetlands, artificial wetlands, and some forested areas. It features diverse land types and a rich variety of wetland types, with a total wetland area of approximately 2,149.6 hectares, accounting for 73.65% of the total park area. By type, it mainly includes four major categories: river wetlands, lake wetlands, marsh wetlands, and artificial wetlands, which are further divided into five subcategories: permanent rivers, permanent freshwater lakes, herbaceous marshes, fishpond wetlands, and farmland wetlands. The large expanse of wetlands in the park plays an important role in protecting the water quality and environmental quality of the Xiashan Reservoir, ensuring the safety of drinking water for Weifang City.
“A misty, enchanting scene where beauty converges; vast stretches of green as if spring has returned.” Xiashan Wetland Park boasts exceptional natural conditions, with its ecological landscape formed by elements such as the lake, rivers, wetlands, and forested areas. Its spatial characteristics present a rich tapestry of “water, grass, and woods,” exuding a strong “purely natural” ambiance. Within the park, rows of towering poplar trees, vast reed marshes, and a diverse array of emergent, floating, and submerged aquatic plants, together with various species of birds, fish, and other wildlife, form a typical wetland landscape that is especially captivating. The lakeside embankment is lined with lush, dense trees on both sides; the riverbanks are covered with fragrant grass, while the wetlands are thick with reeds and cattails; ducks play and gulls fly, while orioles sing and swallows dance. The park also features key natural sights such as sunrise and sunset glows, curling cooking smoke, and moonlit reflections.
The park is rich in flora and fauna: there are 221 species of vascular plants (including 4 varieties and 1 form) from 67 families and 150 genera; as for wild animals (including freshwater plankton and freshwater fish), there are 721 species (including subspecies) from 12 classes, 50 orders, 158 families, and 50 orders, including 2 species under national first-class protection, 22 species under national second-class protection, and 43 species under key protection in Shandong Province. A total of 196 bird species have been recorded, including 2 species under national first-class protection—oriental white stork and great bustard—and 22 species under national second-class protection. Xiashan Wetland Park serves as one of the important stopover sites for bird migration across Northeast Asia’s inland regions and the western Pacific Rim, holding a significant position in the distribution of birds both domestically and internationally, and offering high value for conservation and scientific research.
