Yangzhai Pagoda

Yangzhai Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Shandong Province.

Yangzhai Pagoda is located in Yangzhai Village, Zichuan District. It is built in the style of a pavilion tower, with eight sides and seven levels. The pagoda is constructed entirely of brick, is hollow, and stands about 18 meters tall in total. Inside, there is a staircase that leads directly to the top. The top level serves as a place for enshrining Buddha statues and also offers a view of the surrounding scenery. There are no historical records regarding the exact time of the pagoda’s initial construction, but it was already regarded as an ancient site during the Ming Dynasty.

In terms of architectural style and form, it closely resembles the Ayuwang Pagoda of Haiqing Temple in Lianyungang, which was built during the Song Dynasty. The layout within the temple complex is identical to that of the Fogong Temple Pagoda in Ying County, Shanxi, and the Bai Pagoda in Qingzhou, Inner Mongolia, both constructed during the Liao and Jin periods. Based on this, it is inferred that this pagoda has a history of nearly a thousand years.

This pagoda is a seven-story octagonal brick tower that visitors can climb. It stands 20.76 meters tall in total, with a stone base and brick-built body. The base of the pagoda is 1.29 meters high and has a diameter of 6.55 meters. The east-west diameter at the base is 4.11 meters, while the north-south diameter is 4.17 meters. Each level features arched niches or Buddha shrines, and all four directions are adorned with various styles of false brick windows. The northern side serves as the entrance to the pagoda. Climbing 17 steps leads to the second level from the south, then one turns west to ascend spiral stairs up to the sixth level. The pagoda spire is topped with a round treasure dome. Above the pagoda door, there is an embedded stone plaque inscribed with the four characters “Amitabha Buddha,” signed and dated: “Respectfully inscribed by Shen Quan, auspicious dawn of the summer quarter, the third year of the Kangxi reign.”

Yangzhai Village: Yangzhai Village was once the location of the old government seat of Yangzhai Town. It lies at the western end of Yangzhai Town, bordering Fangdian Community to the east, connecting to Dingwan Village to the north, adjacent to Liufan Village to the south, and facing Lidian Township across the river to the west. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Huangyang Provincial Highway, and Guangshui River all run along its vicinity. The village administers three natural settlements, one street area, eight villager groups, 310 households, 1,380 residents, and 44 Party members. It covers a land area of 1.8 square kilometers, with 550 mu of arable land, 310 mu of mountainous land, and 280 mu of water surface.
