Zitong Mountain

Zitong Mountain is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

National AAA-level Scenic Area – Zitong Mountain Guigudong Scenic Spot is located in Shuanggou Town, Zichuan District, Zibo City, Shandong Province. It can be reached by traveling 3 km east from Zitong Mountain Station on the Binbo Expressway or National Highway 205. As the birthplace of Guiguzi culture, according to folklore and historical records, during the late Spring and Autumn and early Warring States periods, the founding master of the School of Diplomacy, Guiguzi, lectured here and trained four outstanding military strategists, diplomats, and political thinkers: Sun Bin, Pang Juan, Su Qin, and Zhang Yi. In 1994, the Zitong Mountain Guigudong Scenic Spot was established, and Vice Chairman [Name] and [Title] [Name] inscribed the phrase “Guiguzi Fairyland” for the Zitong Mountain Scenic Area. The scenic area features attractions such as Guigudong Cave, Wang Qiao the Filial Son from the Northern Song Dynasty, Yijing Academy, the Wordless Octagonal Stele, the Long Porcelain Wall Inscribed with the Complete Works of Guiguzi, the Taoist “Jade Emperor Palace,” the Buddhist Huangling Temple, Guiguzi Spring, and a wildlife park.

Guigudong Cave, also known as Guiguzi Cave, is where Guiguzi lived in seclusion and lectured during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods.

Su Qin and Zhang Yi were among his disciples. Guigudong Cave has been later referred to as China’s first military academy.

Filial Son Shrine, also known as the Shrine of Wang Qiao the Filial Son from the Song Dynasty. According to the Jiajing Zichuan County Annals from the Ming Dynasty, Wang Qiao, styled Jianwang and also known as Zhuojieweng, was a native of Zitong Mountain Village. In 999 AD, Khitan troops raided and abducted people in Zichuan, and Wang Qiao’s entire family was captured. He walked thousands of miles searching for his family but failed. Later, he returned home, carved wooden statues of his parents for burial, and observed mourning for six years. During this time, he wrote three military treatises — Youbian Ji (Records of Campaigning at the Border), Anbian Ji (Records of Pacifying the Border), and Jingbian Ji (Records of Calming the Border) — hoping to protect the nation and its people and eliminate the threat from Liao. However, his advice was not adopted. Overwhelmed with grief and frustration, Wang Qiao built a brick chamber around himself, calling it the “Cocoon Room.” Later generations, admiring his loyalty and filial piety, built a shrine in his honor. The Filial Son Shrine was initially constructed in the Yuan Dynasty and underwent multiple renovations during the Ming and Qing Dynasties before being rebuilt in August 1996.

Zhenggong Academy, also known as Kangcheng Academy, was one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Old Zichuan. According to the Jiajing Zichuan County Annals from the Ming Dynasty: “Kangcheng Academy is located about ten li east of the county in Zitong Mountain. The establishment of the academy is not recorded as to when it began.” During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Confucian scholar Zheng Xuan, styled Kangcheng, from Gaomi, Shandong, lectured in Zitong Mountain and founded Zhenggong Academy, which attracted a thousand students.

Guiguzi Memorial Stele, also known as the Wordless Octagonal Stele, was erected during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty by eight local gentry from Zichuan to commemorate the 2000th anniversary of Guiguzi’s birth. This stele was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, leaving only the dragon-headed stele top, and was re-erected in the spring of 1995.

The Porcelain Wall Inscription was built in January 1996 and was awarded a Guinness World Record at the Shanghai Great World in 1997. Its content consists of the 23 chapters of the three volumes of Guiguzi, stretching 64 meters in length and 1.2 meters in width, totaling 8,300 characters, all engraved on 160 porcelain tiles. It represents the cultural essence of Guiguzi’s life’s research.

Jade Emperor Palace and Huangling Temple are said to have been initially built during the Sui and Tang Dynasties. During the flourishing Tang Dynasty, there were over a hundred monks and five hundred Taoist priests. Reconstructed in June 1995, some ancient Taoist graves still remain on the west bank of Zitong Lake today.

Zitong Four Springs refer to Zitong Spring, Guiguzi Spring, White Dragon Spring, and Black Tiger Spring, which are the main water sources of the Zitong River. The springs are clear and rich in various minerals, and local residents often drink water from these four springs.
