Niuji'an Wang Family's Unique Residence

The Wang Family's Unique Residence is a remarkable house suspended on a cliff, built between 1952 and 1955 by two brothers of the Wang family, Yuke and Yuepei. From inside the courtyard, it appears to be an ordinary residence, but when viewed from the village, it is a two-story building built on a cliff. Both the west and north rooms have underground levels. One enters through an open-air shaft in the courtyard, then through a passage leading to five underground rooms, all with stone ceilings that are firmly suspended. From the rear windows on the second floor, the view suddenly opens up, revealing the entire panorama of the village. Leaning forward to look down reveals a bottomless abyss that is dizzying.

During the construction of the residence, workers first chiseled a small niche in the cliff and piled stones on it, gradually expanding the foundation and building upward, constructing from the inside out and building as they quarried. To complete this project, all the timber scaffolding from Nuan Shi Wu Village, Zhang Jiayu Village, and the local village was used. The residence also features concealed attack and evacuation defenses against enemies, along with secret mechanisms in the stone walls for storing gold and silver. The Wang Family’s Unique Residence is ingeniously designed and truly lives up to its reputation.

Niuji'an Village: Niuji'an Village is located 6.5 kilometers southwest of Kunlun Town, Zichuan District, Zibo City, Shandong Province, bordering Boshan District to the south. It was established in the mid-Qing Dynasty and is a traditional ancient village with a history of over 400 years. In 2015, Niuji'an Village was designated as a "Provincial-Level Ancient Village" in Shandong Province.

Nestled deep in the mountains, Niuji'an Village enjoys the reputation of being a "village in the sky." Surrounded by mountains, the entire village resembles a reclining ox when viewed from above. Halfway up the mountain lies a small hermitage named "Niuji'an."
