Lotus Nunnery

Lotus Nunnery is situated by the Jin川 River, between Luo Village and Hedong Village in Luozhen District. As you exit the east gate of Luo Village, not far ahead you’ll see a cluster of well-structured, staggered classical Ming and Qing dynasty buildings. With their blue bricks, gray tiles, colorful eaves, and red pillars, they appear both quaint and vibrant. The gilded dragon and phoenix motifs under the eaves, along with the towering three-faced bronze Guanyin statue to the west, gleam brilliantly in the sunlight.

Facing north and backed by the south, Lotus Nunnery stands atop a highland, with the Jin川 River to the west and Magou to the east. The two streams converge in the large river beach to the north. Since ancient times, this area has been covered with pebbles, shallow flowing waters teeming with fish and shrimp, surrounded by lush vegetation and exceptionally beautiful scenery. While most temples face south and back north, Lotus Nunnery is uniquely oriented the opposite way. This takes advantage of the distinctive geographical features of the site, highlighting its uniqueness and distinctive charm.

Lotus Nunnery was first built during the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1621), and has a history of nearly 400 years. It is a temple that integrates both Buddhism and Taoism, encompassing a rich variety of elements. Of course, it has gone through several phases of construction, including initial establishment, expansion, reconstruction, and further expansion, before reaching its current scale. There were two major renovations and expansions in the 35th and 41st years of the Qing Qianlong reign. Legend has it that this was once a royal monastery, where one of Emperor Qianlong’s concubines became a nun. Qianlong is said to have gifted her a golden Buddha and two jars of treasure. It is also rumored that there is a tunnel between the North and South Pavilions, where the treasure is buried, while the golden Buddha was given by corrupt members of the Buddhist community to the Japanese.
