Longqiu Site

The Longqiu Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Dongying City.

The Longqiu Site is located to the north of Dongying Village, Dawang Town, Guangrao County. The mound is about 9 meters high, 60 meters in diameter, and covers an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. It is commonly known as "Longqiu Mountain" or "Liuling Fort," and features a round, two-tiered structure with a slope and a flat top. This ancient mound dates back to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty and holds significant historical and archaeological value. According to the 25th year of the Republic of China edition of the “Guangrao County Annals,” during the Hongwu era (1368–1398) of the Ming Dynasty, Magistrate Xie Zhong built a Dragon King Temple on the mound. Later, additional structures such as a Dragon King Temple and an Old Mother Hall were erected, with incense burners on the left, right, and front sides. A bell tower stood at the southeast corner, while the eastern slope of the hill hosted the Medicine King Hall and the Three Sovereigns Hall, which enshrined statues of famous physicians such as Sun Simiao, Zhang Zhongjing, Bian Que, and Hua Tuo, as well as the deities of the Heavenly Sovereign, Earthly Sovereign, and Human Sovereign. The western slope of the mound featured the Peach Garden Three Lords Hall, which housed clay sculptures of Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei forming their brotherhood oath, along with figures of Zhou Cang and Guan Ping. The walls were adorned with large murals depicting scenes such as the Oath of the Peach Garden and Liu Bei entrusting his son at Baidi City, all with remarkably lifelike figures. Below the Old Mother Hall was the Temple of Wang Lingguan, whose gate bore two couplets: “Those who come with goodness shall find peace eternal; those who pass with evil shall tremble with fear” and “Wang Lingguan surveys the world; the Black Tiger General guards the three gates.” The Dragon King Temple, also known as the Five Dragons Grand Hall, was situated midway up the hill and served as a place where people prayed for rain. During droughts, people would gather here at the toll of the bell, set up altars with offerings, and kneel before the Dragon King to pray for rain to bless the people. In the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty, locals established a free school on the mound’s summit. In the early years of the Republic of China, the structures on the mound were repurposed as a schoolhouse. During the Anti-Japanese War, the buildings on the mound were almost entirely destroyed, leaving only ruins. In 1975, Dongying Village built an elementary school on the mound. In 1984, the school building was converted into a village forestry office. The Longqiu Site has a long history and encompasses both scenic architecture and cultural heritage. It serves as a sacred place where people place their hopes and dreams for the future, and also reflects the ingenuity of ancient Chinese laborers. It was designated as part of the third batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection units in 2017.
