Zhai Village Site

The Zhai Village Site is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Dongying City.

The Zhai Village Site is located about 100 meters southwest of Zhai Village in La'an Subdistrict, Guangrao County. The site stretches approximately 300 meters from north to south and 200 meters from east to west, covering a total area of about 60,000 square meters. This ancient cultural site primarily features remains from the Neolithic Dawenkou Culture of the primitive society to the Han Dynasty culture. It was discovered and confirmed during the 1976 national cultural relics survey. The site has relatively rich cultural layers, with numerous relics and remains. These include tombs, ash pits, and architectural remnants; artifacts consist of pottery ding vessels, stone rings, and stone axes from the Dawenkou Culture period, as well as stone hammers, stone axes, pottery rings, pottery ding vessels, and pottery jars from the Longshan Culture period. Additionally, there are pottery jars, pottery basins, and pottery gui vessels from the Warring States Period to the Han Dynasty. Based on the survey findings and collected artifact samples, relics from the Dawenkou Culture period are relatively scarce, which may be due to their deeper burial and lower visibility. In contrast, artifacts from the Longshan Culture period are more abundant, while those from the Shang, Zhou, and Han Dynasties are relatively fewer. The site spans a long period from the Dawenkou Culture to the Han Dynasty, with substantial cultural accumulation (about 2 meters), distinct local characteristics, and excellent preservation—having suffered no damage. It holds high archaeological research and conservation value. In 2005, it was designated as part of the second batch of municipal-level cultural heritage conservation units.

It governs 77 villages with a population of around 70,000, and covers a total planned area of 100 square kilometers.
