Seven Dragon Pools

The Seven Dragon Pools are located in the northeast corner of Yuejiao Lake. “I asked an old monk about the ancient site, and he pointed north to the Seven Dragon Shoals.” This is how Li Yongshou, the Deputy Director of the Imperial Kitchen Office during the Ming Dynasty’s Jiajing era, described the “Seven Dragon Shoals.”

“The moonlight over the dragon pools remains the same year after year, while the tides along the shore sound the same month after month.” This line was written by Gao Ning, a scholar from the early Ming Dynasty, describing the Seven Dragon Pools. Legend has it that the Jade Emperor sent seven green dragons down to Mount Xiao and Yuejiao Lake to protect the good and righteous. As the saying goes, “It is not the depth of the water, but the presence of dragons that brings spiritual energy.” The seven divine dragons summoned heavenly river water and guarded the pools, thus giving rise to the Seven Dragon Pools at Mount Xiao and Yuejiao Lake. From then on, the auspicious light radiating from the dragon pearls bathed the area day and night, completely transforming what was once a barren land on the edge of a bitter sea. The sky turned blue, the mountains turned green, the water turned sweet, and Mount Xiao became a paradise on earth.
