Xubi Ancestral Hall

Xubi Ancestral Hall is a cultural relics protection unit of Jining City.

Xubi Ancestral Hall is located in Dongxu Taoyuan Village, Xiangcheng Town. It was originally built during the Song Dynasty, renovated during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, and rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. In February 1978, it was designated as a county-level cultural relics protection unit. The hall stretches 32 meters from north to south and 21 meters from east to west. Outside the hall are two stone steles: the eastern one inscribed with “Hometown of Xubi” and the western one with “Tomb and Ancestral Hall of Xubi.” Xubi (345–267 BC), courtesy name Xin Zhang, was originally from Donghai (present-day Tancheng). In his childhood, he moved with his father to the State of Zhu and studied under Mencius. Well-read in classics and history, he was known for his respect for teachers and filial piety, earning the affection of Mencius. He was buried in Xujiataoyuan, Xiangcheng Town after his death. During the Song Dynasty, he was posthumously honored as “Xianyuan Bo,” and in the 21st year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1756), he was given the posthumous title “Xianru Xuzi.”

Dongxu Taoyuan Village: Introduction to Dongxu Taoyuan Village. Located 5.2 kilometers northwest of the town center. The natural village also serves as the administrative village name. The village settlement is rectangular in shape, with the main street running from north to south. The village has 125 households and 445 residents, all of whom are Han Chinese. The cultivated land area is 590 mu, with main crops including peanuts, sweet potatoes, wheat, and corn.

According to the 1892 “Zouxian Xuzhi” (Continued Gazetteer of Zou County) from the 18th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, the village was established in the late Eastern Zhou period and is the hometown of the ancient sage Xubi. His 51st-generation descendant, Xumingzhan, served as Grand Marshal of the Army and Horses during the Hongwu era (1368–1398) of the Ming Dynasty and was later appointed Vice Minister of Revenue.
