Eighteen Arhats Cave Statues on Huangshan Mountain

The Eighteen Arhats Cave Statues on Huangshan Mountain are located on the southern foothills of Huangshan, west of Xiapu Village, Kanzhuang Township, approximately 26 kilometers south of Zoucheng City. They consist of a pair of naturally formed cave openings. One extends northeastward, while the other stretches southeastward. The caves are deep and seemingly endless, varying in width and height — some passages are so narrow that only a single person can squeeze through by crouching, while wider areas can accommodate dozens or even hundreds of people. The interiors feature naturally formed stalactites overhead and coral-like rock formations below, creating a spectacular and diverse natural wonder. The Eighteen Arhats statues are carved into the stone walls at the cave entrances. Their expressions are both similar and distinct — each figure wears a smile, though some smiles are tinged with worry, joy mixed with sorrow, cheer laced with anger, or happiness shadowed by grief. The statues were carved in different eras, with the earliest dating back to the Northern Song Dynasty and the latest from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In 1985, they were designated as a Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of Jining City.
