Jianxin Site
The Jianxin Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Era: Neolithic Age
The Jianxin Site is located in Fuli Village, Xiji Town, Shanting District, Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province, and was discovered during the 1981 cultural relics survey.
The site is situated on a flat terrace about 1.5 meters above the surrounding area on the north side of the village. Drilling surveys showed that the site is elliptical in shape, with a remaining area of about 30,000 square meters. It is surrounded by mountains on the east, south, and north, while the west side opens to a flat plain, and there is a small river to the north of the site. In 1992, when the Jizao Highway was being constructed and needed to pass through the site, the archaeological excavation team from the Shandong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted two large-scale excavations at the site. They discovered 27 dwelling foundations of the Dawenkou Culture, 261 ash pits and storage pits, 92 graves, one well, and one pottery kiln, unearthing over 1,000 artifacts including pottery, stone tools, and bone or horn implements. An ancient stream divides the site into two parts: the eastern part is the residential area, and the western part is the burial area. The residential area yielded more than 10 dwelling sites, three of which were semi-subterranean, along with eight ash pits, and a large number of mainly plain pottery fragments and other relics. A well found in this area represents the first discovery of such a structure from the Dawenkou Culture, pushing back the historical turning point when ancestors switched from drinking river water to well water by over a thousand years. The burial area included tombs of both adults and children. Among them was a joint burial tomb of a couple, with the heads of the deceased facing east. Legend has it that Fuxi was born in Fuli Village and later married Nüwa, the matriarchal tribal leader of the Hongbu people who lived near Jinling Temple in Yicheng District. Together, they had children here. To the south of Fuli Village lies Fushan Mountain, atop which stand the temples of Fuxi and Nüwa. More than ten stone tablets inside the temples remain well-preserved to this day.
In May 2013, it was designated and announced by the State Council as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
