Memorial Site of the 300 Red Army Martyrs at Wufeng Cave

The Memorial Site of the 300 Red Army Martyrs at Wufeng Cave is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangxi Province and a classic red tourism destination.

The Monument to the Martyrs Who Died at Wufeng Cave in Dexing is located on the scenic Paoma Ping at Wufeng Cave. In 1934, the 10th Red Army Corps, led by its Political Commissar Fang Zhimin, Commander Liu Chuxi, Chief of Staff Su Yu, and Director of the Political Department Liu Ying, advanced into southern Anhui and headed north to resist the Japanese invasion. At that time, the Kuomintang was pursuing a policy of “pacifying the domestic front before resisting foreign aggression,” and assembled a large force to try to block the Red Army’s northward advance. In January 1935, the Red Army’s Northern Expedition Vanguard was forced to retreat to the revolutionary base in northeastern Jiangxi for rest and regrouping, but was then encircled again in Huaiyu Mountain. On Qingming Festival, 300 wounded soldiers who had broken through the encirclement and were recuperating at Wufeng Cave were brutally “suppressed” by the 43rd Division of the Kuomintang, and all were tragically killed. To commemorate the martyrs who died, in 1987, a “Monument to the Martyrs Who Died at Wufeng Cave” was erected on a picturesque hilltop at Paoma Ping. The back of the monument bears an inscription by Fang Zhichun commemorating the 50th anniversary of the martyred Red Army officers and soldiers at Wufeng Cave: “Tall as the Brush Rack Mountain, long flows the Ma Stream; the martyrs who perished here will be remembered forever.”

The Memorial Site of the 300 Red Army Martyrs at Wufeng Cave (including the memorial pavilion, monument, martyr Shao Boping’s tomb, and Paoma Ping) is located in the Wufeng Cave Forest Farm, Huaqiao Town, Dexing City. It was built in August 1986. The memorial pavilion covers an area of 187.5 square meters, with a construction area of 37.4 square meters and a height of 7.5 meters. The pavilion is octagonal in shape, with a solemn and classic design, and in its center stands a marble stele. The front of the stele is engraved with: “Monument to the Martyrs Who Died at Wufeng Cave.” The back of the stele features an inscription by Fang Zhichun, former Governor of Jiangxi Province, in August 1986: “Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the martyred Red Army officers and soldiers at Wufeng Cave — Tall as the Brush Rack Mountain, long flows the Ma Stream; the martyrs who perished here will be remembered forever.” In 1960, the People’s Committee of Dexing County built the Tomb of Martyr Shao Boping at Wufeng Cave, with the inscription written by Shao Shiping, then Governor of Jiangxi Province.
